Des amis fran\u00e7ais \u00e9taient venus me rendre visite, et nous avions lanc\u00e9 un pari : qui serait le premier \u00e0 compter cent temples. Nous avons abandonn\u00e9 d\u00e8s le premier jour \u2014 les dieux \u00e9taient partout, innombrables, pr\u00e9sents \u00e0 chaque coin de rue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c0 ce moment-l\u00e0, m\u00eame Taipei, pourtant calme en apparence, \u00e9tait r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement secou\u00e9e par de l\u00e9gers tremblements de terre. C\u2019est dans ce contexte que j\u2019ai fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 mon premier \u00ab Dieu du Sol \u00bb, une petite sculpture en terre, pour prot\u00e9ger ma famille.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De retour \u00e0 Paris, j\u2019ai continu\u00e9 \u00e0 modeler d\u2019autres figures, en leur donnant des attributs plus proches de notre quotidien. Puis la pand\u00e9mie de Covid-19 est survenue. C\u2019est \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 que j\u2019ai compris, plus clairement que jamais, pourquoi nos anc\u00eatres confiaient leurs espoirs \u00e0 ces petites idoles de terre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dans la tradition chinoise, les divinit\u00e9s sont omnipr\u00e9sentes. Toute \u00e2me transcendante ayant acc\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019immortalit\u00e9 dans les cieux peut devenir un dieu. Les statuettes d\u2019argile ne sont pas les dieux eux-m\u00eames, mais leurs repr\u00e9sentations symboliques \u2014 des marqueurs de leur pr\u00e9sence.
